History

The founder of the Red Cross is Henry Dunant. Henry Dunant witnessed a suffering in Italy on the battlefield in 1859. As the Red Cross was back then under Henry Dunant's vision, the Red Cross works to alleviate suffering caused by fighting. The Red Cross also, helps people to strengthen their capacities to live healthier lives and avoid conflicts.

Goals

The goals for the Canadian Red Cross are to to provide for people's basic needs – food, clothing, shelter, first aid, emotional support and family reunification. Also to, reduce the number of deaths, injuries and impact from disasters. Reduce the number of deaths, illnesses and impact from diseases and public health emergencies. Increase local community, civil society and Red Cross Red Crescent capacity to address the most urgent situations of vulnerability. Promote respect for diversity and human dignity, and reduce intolerance, discrimination and social exclusion.

Where in the World

The Red Cross has spread out to many different places helping families in need. The Red Cross is now in Africa, America, Asia/Pacific, Europe, east/borth Africa.

Success Stories

In Australia the Red Cross was able to reconect 541 families out of the 849 handled cases. The familis helped can now reforge bonds and live wiht hope.
This success story is about a young boy in Australia who was taken from his family one thousand kilometres away from home. He was taken to Angola's fierce civil war. Children taken would perform domestic work for the warring parties. They travelled many days to get this little boy home. When they reached his home f=his father ran out to greet them and was very nice. When his mother saw he was back home she dropped everything, ran over and picked him up on her back and started to dance, sing and cry. Her little boy was home.

There has been substantial progress made in the management of SARCS human resources in the last two years, particularly with regard to the establishment of policies, procedures, the revision of the structures and the development of a performance management system that is currently being implemented.

As part of this international organization, we send goods, volunteers and expertise to relieve disaster victims wherever there is human need.

As part of the International Red Cross Movement, the American Red Cross is governed by the principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality.
While all Red Cross services meet national standards, no two chapters are exactly the same.
