Success Stories

Save the Children runs many projects. One of these many projects is the Kroo Bay Project. It is located in central Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. They do this because the people there lack access to sanitation and health services. There is alot of poverty there and the children are malnourished. They have renovated a rundown clinic, training all healthcare workers, providing vital equipment like delivery beds so mothers can give birth at peace. All of this is done with the goverment so that this can all continue even if Save the Children leaves. They are also explaining to parents why it is important to sleep under mosquito nets and get vaccinations for their children. All healthcare provided at the clinic is free. They are trying to abolish health care fees in Sierra Leone as well as raising health awareness to the public. In order to live the benefits of a healthy community. Besides healthcare changes they have helped clear and bank the river to stop the flooding, provided the tools to continue banking the river each year, provided four large bins to dispose of rubbish safely and are campaining with the people of Kroo Bay to get the government to stop people dumping rubbish in the river.

Another project they have is the Lebanon project. It is located all over Lebanon. They are doing this to create safe spaces for people of all kind in need of them. They have community Youth Development Programs. Examples of these include:
- Naseej it raises youth leadership and interaction with the community
-Siraj demonstrates positive and practical ways to contribute to society and the community

Project of Focus

Our new campaign is focusing on the issue of Hunger in Haiti. Even before the devastation earthquake that hit Haiti, they were not very well off. If before you thought it was bad, now it is even worse. Before the earthquake, 1.9 million people need assistance with getting food to live on. Before the devastation, only 50% of the population had access to safe drinking water. That percent had dropped drastically since the earthquake, and we can help! That is why we are starting a new campaign for Hunger in Haiti. Food is a necessity that everyone has the right to, and these people aren’t getting it. That is why this project needs such attention from the public; it is an issue that is very serious.
To start off this campaign, we are having a ‘Hike for Hunger’. In each major city, there are going to be people going around and collecting money and food that we can send over to Haiti. They will all be held on the same day, and at the end of the night, there will be a ‘Ceremony of the Cards’, where each person who donated something is given the chance to write something to the people in Haiti. That night, all the food and money will be sent over to Haiti. During the ceremony, there will also be draws for ‘Hunger in Haiti’ shirts to promote the event.

  • Each year 10.1 million children die worldwide before reaching the age of 5. That’s 28,000 children a day.

  • Despite a 60 percent reduction in under-5 child deaths between 1960 and 2000, progress has dramatically slowed or been reversed in many countries.

  • One death in every 5 in the world is the death of a child under the age of 5.

  • Every minute, a woman meets her death during pregnancy or childbirth.

  • Every year, 2 million newborn babies die on the day they are born.

  • Nearly all child and maternal deaths (99 percent) occur in developing countries where mothers and children lack access to basic health care services.

  • The biggest killers of children worldwide are newborn complications, pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria.

  • Using existing tools and knowledge, we could save more than 6 million of the 10 million children who die every year from easily preventable or treatable causes.

Why did we choose this organization:
-We care about childrens' rights
-It seemed similar to Free the Children a charity we were intrested in
-It was an unknown charity to both of us that we wanted to check out
